The ‘Whisky Sour’ cocktail has existed for centuries and was initially consumed by sailors during their long voyages out to sea. Although this may be surprising, the drink was popular among sailors due to both its nutritional benefits and convenience.
Scurvy was a major health risk for sailors, caused by a lack of vitamin C, therefore ships were packed with abundant supplies of citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges and limes before leaving ports to try and combat this issue. In addition, whisky was a convenient form of alcohol to have on board as it could be stored and consumed at room temperature.
Therefore, through combining lemon or lime juice with watered-down whisky and a dash of white sugar, the famous ‘Whisky Sour’ was created. As a result, British sailors acquired the nickname ‘limeys’ due to their regular consumption of the drinks!
The first official documentation of the ‘Whisky Sour’ cocktail was in the 1862 book by Jerry Thomas - The Bartender’s Guide: How to Make Drinks. His original recipe consisted of 1 large teaspoon of sugar dissolved in a little seltzer/ Apollinaris water, the juice of half a lemon and one wine glass of Bourbon whisky.
Since then, the recipe has been adapted in a variety of ways. New York created its own twist by adding a dash of red wine to the drink as a final garnish and coining it the ‘New York Sour’. Similarly, Boston experimented with the addition of an egg white to create a smooth, foamy texture – this was coined the ‘Boston Sour’.
Other variations also include ingredients such as maple syrup, to create the ‘Maple Rye Sour’; rosemary, to create the ‘Libertine’; apricot brandy to create the ‘Baltimore Bang’; and apple brandy to create the ‘Jersey Sour’.
Our version of the classic Whisky Sour uses our delicious Beeble Honey Whisky, which is naturally sweetened with locally-produced honey, harvested by our Wiltshire hives. We then combine this with a squeeze of lemon juice for a hint of sourness as well as an egg white to add an exquisite foamy, velvet-like texture to the drink. This creates a perfect balance of sweet and sour – the ultimate refreshment for a warm summer’s day.
Beeble Honey Whisky Sour Cocktail

Serving size: 1
· 75ml of Beeble Honey Whisky
· 1 Egg White
· 25ml Fresh Lemon Juice
· Slice of Orange and/or a Maraschino Cherry
Place all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with a few cubes of ice
Strain into an ice-filled low-ball tumbler to serve on the rocks
Garnish with a slice of orange
