‘The Moscow Miele’
The Moscow Mule is a classic cocktail which first gained popularity in America during the 1940s and became an officially recognised drink in 1941 when it was brought to Manhattan bars. The cocktail is part of the ‘buck’ family due to the presence of ginger beer and citrus juice in the drink. Consequently, it is often referred to in its American home town as the ‘Vodka Buck’. The classic recipe contains a mixture of ginger beer, vodka and fresh lime juice, served in a copper Moscow Mule mug. As copper is renowned for its excellent conducting properties, this metal is used because it keeps the drink ice-cold, hence enhancing its aroma and flavour.
Moscow Mule Cocktail
It is alleged that the Moscow Mule was first invented by a bartender who was trying to sell out their ginger beer, vodka and copper mugs, however a few variations of this story exist.
The cocktail is strong, fairly sweet, and has a spicy kick to it. Served ice-cold, it is the perfect refresher for a summer’s evening and also works well for a party in a pitcher. Equally, it is a delicious aperitif during the winter, to tickle the taste buds.
Variations of the Moscow Mule include the ‘Kentucky Mule’, which uses bourbon instead of vodka; the ‘Mexican Mule’, which uses tequila instead of vodka; the ‘Dark and Stormy’, which replaces vodka with dark rum and is served in a high-ball glass; and finally, the ‘Irish Mule’, which replaces the vodka Irish whisky, leaving a spicy after-taste.
Dark and Stormy Cocktail
To make the Beeble version of a Moscow Mule, we use Beeble Honey Vodka mixed with a good squeeze of lime juice and topped up with ginger beer. We like to serve it ice-cold, garnished with a sprig of mint and a lime wedge, creating a Beeble ‘Moscow Miele’.
Give it a go and send feedback our way – we’d love to hear your thoughts!
